USS Cairo

USS Cairo

Virtually invulnerable to gunfire, the great iron-armored gunships of the Civil War changed the course of naval warfare. Now you can experience just how magnificent these warships really were. Each handpainted resin replica is accurate in detail and includes a wooden stand with nameplate. Replica measures 21"W x 6"D x 6 1/2"H. The USS Cairo, commissioned in January 1862, was one of seven ironclads named in honor of towns along the upper Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The North hoped to regain control of the lower Mississippi with these gunboats and split the Confederacy in two. Cairo was active in the occupation of Nashville in 1862 and played a role in the battle to capture Memphis. On December 12, 1862, while clearing mines near Vicksburg, Cairo struck a torpedo and sank in 12 minutes. Cairo became the first armored warship sunk by an electrically detonated mine.
